OCCULTATION PHOTO'S

Lunar Occultation of Saturn - 22nd May 2007

This was the second of 2 saturn occultations by the moon. The disappearance was not imaged because it ocurred during daytime hours. However the reappearance occurred during twilight hours with the sun already set. This sequence of images show the re-appearance of Saturn from behind the moon. A truly awesome sight through the eyepiece being able to see the vast size comparison of the two objects. Especially in the knowledge that the smaller looking saturn is over 10 times larger than the moon in real terms! Due to the contrast in brightness of the two objects a camera cannot capture the true beauty of the view through a telescope. This is probably the most amazing sight I have ever witnessed at the eyepiece to date.

An animated gif of five photo's capturing the re-appearance of Saturn from behind the Moon. From ring edge to ring edge the planet took no more than 20-25 seconds to appear from behind the moon showing just how far the moon moves at this magnification
