May Observing Report
A mixed month weather wise but I did get the chance to have a couple of viewing nights. May as always gave me a warning that true sky darkness is slipping away from me very rapidly. Twilight seems to be hanging around well up to 10:30pm! The highlight of the month has to be the Occultation of Saturn for obvious reasons. It is the single most stunning sight I have seen through my telescope to date. Also Venus put on a great show. Quite a few people have asked me what an earth that bright thing is in the West. Being joined by the crescent moon it was an awesome sight on the 19th. As for telescopic views, I have reduced my viewings of Saturn after a two month marathon on the seductive planet. I am very surprised as to how quickly it's moved over towards the Western sky already, soon it will be lost as it goes behind the sun's glare. Viewing the vast array of galaxies available this time of year was hindered by either high cloud or twilight.
Objects viewed (including a few objects I've never looked for before)...
Algieba - A nice golden/yellow double star in Leo (Very tight pair, pleasing sight)
M65/M66 - Pair of galaxies in Leo (barely visible this time around)
M53 - A not so spectacular globular cluster in Coma Berenices
M64 - The Black Eye Galaxy (a VERY faint smudge.. I think)
M3 - A fine globular cluster in Canes Venatici
M81/82 - Brightest pair of galaxies I have come across, had to have another gander!
