March Observing Report
TOTALITY
29th March 2006, Image Courtesy of NASA
After a 3 year wait, a total solar eclipse was witnessed from Brazil, the Atlantic Ocean, Northern Africa and Central Asia ending in Northern Mongolia.
The above image was taken from my live webcast in Somerset. Only a partial eclipse was seen from the UK.
Finally seen M51 the Whirlpool Galaxy. Very faint smudge is all that was revealed
Some great views of Saturn viewed again
Other objects viewed: Mars, M42, M44, M45 and Double Cluster (See Jan for proper names)
Picture of 5 day old Moon taken.
On a late night, seen Jupiter for the first time since June (not with scope)
A string of clear nights started March off well. A glimpse of Jupiter rising at 12:30am shows a sneak preview of what's to come in the next few months at more earthly hours. Days before and after the eclipse were cloudy and wet. Weather for the eclipse in Somerset were ideal and I managed a successful webcast of the event
