February Observing Report

Saturn is back, but not quite so majestic

I have got my first views of Saturn this year. Very nice to revisit a favourite object. The rings however are almost completely edge on so the planet has lost a bit of its visual beauty.

2 general Winter sky observing nights

Not the best conditions in the world on both nights. However it was nice to finally revisit the winter sky once again. It was more of a sweep around than concentrating too long on each object.

  • Andromeda Galaxy
  • Perseus Double Cluster
  • Pleiades Cluster
  • Orion Nebula
  • Open clusters - M35, M36, M37, M38
  • Double stars - Mirach, Castor, Alcor/Mizar
  • Other stars - Capella, Betlegeuse, Sirius
  • Comet Lulin

I have eagerly awaited to view this comet as it has become bright enough to easily view in binoculars. However I have been tormented by the weather and other commitments on clear nights. I have also had problems with a neighbouring tree blocking the view until later in the night! I am rather dissapointed to say that I may not be able to view the comet before the March full moon.
