The astronomical event of 2007 has to be Comet Holmes. On October 24th, Comet 17P Holmes brightened by almost a million times in an outburst from magnitude 17 to 2. To you and me that means it went from only being visible in very large telescopes to being so bright it can be viewed with the naked eye. To make things even stranger, the comet did not show much of a tail. During the first few days it looked like just a spherical disc in the sky with a clear nucleus. To be fair, it looked like a normal brightish, fuzzy star to the un-trained eye; however all was revealed in binoculars. A telescope showed off a truley haunting sight. As the weeks went on, the dust and material from the outburst expanded at an alarming rate. This made the comet very huge but all the time dimming.
